Question No. 10
Is old carpet unhealthy?
Old carpet can hold years of dust, dander, mould spores, and VOCs in its fibres and underpad. Past 10 to 15 years, vacuuming and steam cleaning stop reaching the bottom layer, and allergens build up where you cannot see them.
Watch for these signs the carpet is past its date:
- Persistent musty or pet smell after a deep clean
- Visible matting in traffic lanes that won't lift
- Allergy or asthma symptoms that ease when you leave the house
- A history of water damage from basement floods or leaks
Replacing tired carpet plus underpad is usually the fastest indoor-air win in an older home. These five signs will tell you whether yours has reached that point.
