Question No. 26 1 min read

Is thicker carpet better?

Not always. Density beats thickness when it comes to wear. A short, dense pile resists matting and crushing far better than a thick, loosely tufted carpet that looks plush in the showroom and flattens in the hallway.

What actually matters for durability:

  • Face weight (oz/sq yd) – higher is denser fibre, all else equal
  • Twist level – tighter twist holds shape longer
  • Fibre type – nylon and triexta over polyester for traffic areas
  • Underpad thickness – 8 lb rebond is the sweet spot, more isn't better

Thick plush is right for bedrooms. For halls, stairs, and family rooms, choose dense over deep.
